1883 BULGARIAN SCIENCE AND ART SILVER AWARD MEDAL BADGE ![]() Ladies and Gents, we are pleased to offer here, from an outstanding private collection, an ultra rare Bulgarian Silver MEDAL for SCIENCE AND ART. Instituted on March, 24th 1883. This medal is Second issue by Prince Ferdinand, made of silver. Engraver: A. Scharff, Bare-headed bust of Prince Ferdinand I of Bulgaria on obverse; on reverse: Sitting Goddess of Wisdom MINERVA holding a Shield with Lion with Saxon's Coat of Arms; behind her ~ Temple of Athena with Athens Goddess. More about the engraver: Scharff, Anton (born June 10th, 1845, died 1903), designed medals for "The Corporation of the City of London". Former Chief Engraver of the Austrian Mint. Born in Vienna, he was the son of the medalist Michael Scharff. He studied at the Vienna Academy and from 1862 learned engraving under David Boehm at the school attached to the Vienna Mint. He was appointed assistant engraver at the Austrian Mint in 1866 and became engraver in 1868. He became director of the school of engraving in 1881 and court medallist in 1887. Medal condition: excellent, lustrous condition. almost non-circulated, great patina on silver. measures 36mm diameter; weight: 20,40 Grams pure silver.
