It also shows the Moon surface with the landing place of the probe, the model is carrying the Lunar surface sample rock at its top (butterscotch marble piece). Model is made of high quality nickel-chromed metal. Historical Reference:On September 12, 1970, the Soviet Union launched Luna 16 to Moon in what would become the first successful return of lunar mission by an automated probe: 101 grams. The USA had already done this twice in 1969 with Apollo 11 and 12. The Soviets were able to accomplish this goal with robots two more times, in 1972 with Luna 20 and 1976 with Luna 24. Luna 16 made the first night landing on Luna, some sixty hours after sunset. Luna 16 returned excellent images from the lunar surface (but were not shown outside of the USSR). The model is of the first automatic station, World's first space vehicle to deliver lunar rock to the Earth. This unique experiment of the Soviets space program has opened up entirely new opportunities in a complex exploration of the Solar System planets by automatic interplanetary stations.
